I named the 2022 Tour de France Femmes documentary, Out in Front, and wrote the synopsis and press release.
Talk about a career defining moment. This was a high-stakes project with no room for error.
2022 saw the first official Tour de France Femmes race after a hiatus of more than 30 years.
This marked a seminal moment for gender equality in cycling.
Why I chose ‘Out in Front’ as the title, and why it was CEO-approved
In cycling, a peloton is a large group of riders bunched together on the race route.
When you watch the Tour de France, you’ll see that main body of cyclists. And sometimes you’ll see a rider break away from the peloton if they manage to accelerate ahead of it.
As the title suggests, Out in Front is about riders who have the strength and courage to break away from convention.
A documentary name is permanent. It either captures it or it doesn’t.
This was a seminal moment in women’s sport, and the name had to carry that without collapsing.
Out in Front had to work for the audience that understands the race, and for a broader audience discovering women’s cycling for the first time.
